Deciding

Is labiaplasty worth it?

In shortFor women whose labia cause real discomfort, most say it was. A 2024 review of the research found 94% of women were satisfied with the result. It's less likely to help if the main hope is to feel differently about your body, or if someone else wants it for you.

What the research says

A 2024 review in the Aesthetic Surgery Journal pooled the results of dozens of studies and found 94% of women were satisfied with their labiaplasty, across all the techniques. The authors also say the evidence is limited and measured in different ways from study to study. Treat 94% as a sign that most women are pleased, not as a promise for any one person.

Who tends to be glad

  • Women whose labia rub, twist or get sore in clothes, during exercise or cycling, or during sex
  • Women who have thought about it for a long time, not weeks
  • Women who chose a careful surgeon and wanted a modest change, not a particular look

When it's less likely to help

If the main reason is how they look, it helps to know how much labia vary. In one London hospital study, the inner lips of 50 women aged 18 to 50 measured anywhere from 2 cm to 10 cm long. Pictures online are often edited or chosen, and don't show that range.

Surgery changes the labia, not the feeling behind it. If worry about how you look is weighing on you, or a partner is pushing for it, talking to your GP or a counsellor first can help as much as an operation. The UK's NHS gives the same advice.

Questions to ask yourself

  • What exactly bothers me, and when?
  • Have I had any itching or soreness checked by a GP?
  • Is this for me, or for someone else?
  • Can I afford €3,000 to €7,000 and a week or two off?
  • Am I ready for the risks, including an uneven or over-reduced result?

If you decide to go ahead

Every doctor practising in Ireland must be registered with the Medical Council, and only a doctor with specialist registration can practise independently as a specialist. For labiaplasty, look for a surgeon on the Specialist Division in Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery, or a gynaecologist on the Specialist Division in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, using the Medical Council's online register.

Nobody needs an urgent labiaplasty. If a clinic pushes you to book or pay a deposit on the day, walk away and take your time.

Questions people ask

What percentage of women are happy with labiaplasty?

A 2024 review of the research found 94% were satisfied, across all techniques. The studies were small and varied, so it's a guide, not a promise.

Do people regret labiaplasty?

Some do, most often after too much tissue was removed, or when the operation was meant to fix how they felt about their body.

Is my labia normal?

Almost certainly. Labia vary a lot from woman to woman, in length, shape, colour and how much they show. One side is often longer than the other. Inner lips that hang below the outer lips are common and normal.

Should I see my GP before labiaplasty?

Yes, especially if you have itching, soreness or a skin change. Your GP can also refer you to a gynaecologist.
