Who to trust

Choosing a labiaplasty surgeon in Ireland

In shortChoose a doctor on the Medical Council's Specialist Division, either in Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery or in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, who does labiaplasty often. Meet them in person before you book, ask how many they do, and see photos of their own results.

Check the register

Every doctor practising in Ireland must be registered with the Medical Council, and only a doctor with specialist registration can practise independently as a specialist. For labiaplasty, look for a surgeon on the Specialist Division in Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery, or a gynaecologist on the Specialist Division in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, using the Medical Council's online register.

"Cosmetic surgeon" isn't a specialty the Medical Council recognises, and nothing stops anyone using the words. Check the register, not the title.

Plastic surgeon or gynaecologist?

Both do labiaplasty. Plastic surgeons are trained in reshaping and in fine scarring; gynaecologists know the anatomy of the vulva and vagina and treat the medical conditions that can look like a labial problem. What matters most is how many labiaplasties that doctor does, and whether their results are the kind you want.

Questions to ask

  • Which register are you on, and in which specialty?
  • How many labiaplasties do you do a year?
  • Which technique would you use for me, trim or wedge, and why?
  • Would you reduce the clitoral hood too?
  • Local or general anaesthetic, and where?
  • How many of your patients needed a second operation?
  • Can I see photos of your own patients' results?
  • What's included in the price, and who do I ring at night?

Warning signs

  • A price or offer that ends on a set date
  • Pressure to pay a deposit on the day
  • Not meeting the surgeon who will operate until the day itself
  • No discussion of risks, or a promise of a particular look
  • Before and after photos that aren't of the surgeon's own patients

A woman surgeon?

If you'd prefer a woman, say so when you enquire. Some clinics can arrange it, and you can ask for a chaperone at any examination.

Questions people ask

Should a plastic surgeon or a gynaecologist do my labiaplasty?

Either can. Choose on the register, experience with labiaplasty and their own results.

How do I check a surgeon is registered in Ireland?

Search the Medical Council's online register by name and check they're on the Specialist Division.

Is a cosmetic surgeon the same as a plastic surgeon?

No. "Cosmetic surgeon" isn't a recognised specialty. Check the register, not the title.

Can I ask for a female surgeon?

Yes. Say so when you enquire; some clinics can arrange it.
